Who is Nurture Works?
Nurture Works is an initiative St. Mary’s Community Care (Busselton) which is a Public Benevolent Institution receiving Tax deductibility status with the ATO.Nurtureworks is therefore a non-profit, charitable, community organisationNurture Works was started in and is based in Busselton - Western AustraliaNurture Works aim is: “To grow confident children in a positive environment.”
What is the philosophy of BUZ?
BUZ stands for Build Up ZoneBUZ is proactive and preventativeBUZ helps create environments where children feel safe and are respectedBUZ aims to inject kids with hopeBUZ works to create an environment where:
J Each child is treasured and encouraged to contribute
J Build ups take the place of put downs
J Conflicts are solved in peaceful ways
J Negatives are turned to positives - focusing on the good
J Feelings are acknowledged and expressed in healthy ways
Is BUZ a program?
BUZ is a culture and an ethos. BUZ is about creating an environment of respect, positive relationships, resolution and resilience. Within the many BUZ initiatives there are a number of specific programs.
How can a school benefit from promoting BUZ within their pedagogy?
BUZ can be a perfect umbrella to place all initiatives in the areas of Values, Virtues, Relationships, Resilience, Pastoral Care, Social Skills and Emotional Intelligence.Children relate to the mascot “BUZ” and are able to quickly identify key elements in the ‘Build Up Zone’ philosophy. BUZ shows and programs create a springboard that enables children to feel positive about social skills where they feel treated with integrity. Children feel empowered by BUZ!BUZ is about training children in social skills, which are important life skills that shouldn’t be left to chance. BUZ promotes positive values and helps children convert them into virtues that can be put into practice in their lives. This will lead to desirable outcomes like; personal happiness, good relationships, self confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence and personal mastery.
Is BUZ evidence Based?
In 2004 and 2005 Nurture Works conducted a survey on the impact of BUZ on the lives of children, their classes and their families. The results of the survey are summarized in a paper called “Confidence and Connectedness” (downloadable from the BUZ website)Nurture Works surveys demonstrate evidence that the BUZ programs are having a positive effect on children through the eyes of their parents, their teachers and the children themselves.The surveys also showed the more exposure children have to BUZ initiatives the more positive outlook they have in their lives.
